Our Coaches

The Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club was created for all Horry County residents. From the young to the young at heart, we hope to create exciting events not only for the novice, but also for the seasoned professional. As always, the events will be perfect for the entire family to attend!

Clarence L. Richardson, Jr, Head Coach

Coach RichardsonCoach (Rich) Richardson is an Air Force Veteran and former Air Force Track and Field coach with 30 years of diverse experience and success as a multi-sport athlete, assistant and head coach, special events planner, volunteer, director, supporter, sponsor; and athletics program innovator for high visible youth and adult sports and recreation programs at the community, military, and college, national, international and U.S. Olympic level.

Richardson is a retired emergency and disaster management consultant in the homeland security, banking and financial services industry. He recently moved to Myrtle Beach from Columbus – Ft Benning GA where he was a long-time native prior and after living in Denver CO for 23 years. Richardson is a 1975 graduate of Columbus High School in Columbus GA were he competed in the 400, 800, 4x100/200/400 Relays, and 100/300 hurdles. A 1979 graduate of Troy State University in Troy AL, were he earned his B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice, and competed in indoor/outdoor track in the 400, 600, 800, 400 hurdles as a walk-on for 4 years.

Coach Richardson began his coaching career at the age of 22 years old while serving his active military duty as a Law Enforcement –Security Police Officer at Clark Air Base, Philippines from 1980-1982, where he started a varsity track and field team he named – Clark Striders, a team of active duty military and civilians who competed in local and national meets, to include in a national meet in Tokyo, Japan.

A summary of Coach Richardson’s achievements and accolades include coaching consecutive U.S. Armed Forces Inter-Service Track & Field Team Champions for both men & women (1984, 1985), coached 1984 400m (44.2) and 4x400m (43.75) Olympic Gold Medalist, Air Force 1st Lt. Alonzo Babers as member of 1984 USAF Track Team; and coached 1984 U.S. Nationals 3rd Place Long Jumper (27’-9”) Mike Davis (U of Arkansas) as a Wagner High School track prep at Clark AB, Philippines.

Richardson has also coached seven Philippine National Champions, 23 Air Force All-Americans, a 2nd place national high school 4 x 100m relay team; Coached and competed as member of a national championship 4 x 100m relay team, and lead his team to a 3rd Place Team (Men’s Division) at the Philippine National Track & Field Championships, Manila, Philippines. Richardson is a member of the Troy State University 1977 Gulf South Conference Track & Field Champions, Troy State University, and trained with members of a Troy State University Cross-Country team what won consecutive Gulf South Conference Championships from 1975-1979.

Coach Richardson’s professional mentors are Coach Ernie Cunliffe, a 1960 U.S. Olympian in the 800m, and Coach John “Doc” Anderson, former Head Track Coach/Athletic Trainer at Troy State University (1967 – 1979). Cunliff, is a Retired Air Force Lt. Colonel and former Director of AF Academy Sports, Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs CO. Under Cunliffe, Richardson served as an assistant coach to both men and women’s track and field teams; and head sprint/relay coach for the 1984 Air Force T&F Training Camp, U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs CO. John “Doc” Anderson is a current nominee into the Troy University Sports Hall of Fame, and an awarded Professor in Kinesiology and Sports Medicine at Troy University in Troy AL.

Chrissie Ott, Long Jump and Relays Coach

MBTFC is proud to have Chrissie coaching our youth. This is Chrissie's third year of coaching at MBTFC. Chrissie Ott is a graduate of University of Virginia in 1995 on a track and field scholarship. She was an ACC champion in the 4 x 100m in 1995 and an ECAC champion in the 4 x 100 in 1994. Chrissie holds the 4 x 100 m record of 45.11 at UVa that still holds today. She competed in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m and long jump in high school and college. She was awarded Athlete of the Year at West Potomac High School in 1989, 1990 and 1991. Chrissie placed second in the state of Virginia in the long jump in 1991. She still holds West Potomac High School 55m and 100m record from 1991. Chrissie was awarded the Washington Post's All Metropolitan Athlete in 1990 and 1991. Her current public records are:

  • Long Jump - 20 ft
  • 100m - 11.8
  • 200m - 24.9
  • 4.x100m - 45.11

Chrissie Ott is a board member for Myrtle Beach Track and Field Club. She is married to Erik Ott and has two sons, Mathi and Christian.

Chris Walker, High Jumps Coach

Track & Field Accomplishments:

  • Won 1983-84 Indiana High Jump State Championship as a Junior with a jump of 6’10”
  • 1983 AAU National runner-up for 15-16 year-olds with a jump of 6’8”.
  • High School All-American for High Jump in 1984.
  • Still hold high school records in high jump @ 7”, Long Jump @ 22’2” and 4x400 relay.
  • Held school records in 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, HJ and LJ at end of high school career.
  • Achieved varsity letter freshman year at Purdue University.
  • 5th year coaching HJ with MBTFC.

Personal Info:

  • Self-employed for 22 years at DCW Investments, Inc operating businesses in the Boardwalk area of Downtown Myrtle Beach.
  • Married 15 years to wife Christine with two children, Anna and Aidan.
  • Enjoys coaching children in track, basketball and baseball.
  • Founding board member and President of the Oceanfront Merchants Association in Downtown Myrtle Beach.

The last 4 years coaching track has been the most rewarding work I’ve ever been involved with. Getting to train such naturally talented children with supportive families and coaches has been an amazing experience. I’ve really enjoyed helping children realize their potential through hard work and attention to technique.

Thom Van Demark, Assistant Coach, Shot/Discus/Hammer

  • First 60 foot Shot Putter in High School’s History
